Vancouver Opera closes its 2023-24 season with this large-scale production that updates the original setting of Georges Bizet’s opera from late 19th century southern Spain to an unnamed pan-Latin city in the mid-1950s. Rachel Peake directs a cast that includes mezzo-sopranos Sarah Mesko (April 27, May 2 and 4) and Carolyn Sproule (April 28 and May 5) as the title character. It’s been almost a decade since Vancouver Opera last produced the beloved opera. Carmen is sung in French with SURTITLES™ in English projected on the stage.
Canada’s Last Challenge Season 2
When: Starting April 28
Where: CBC TV and CBC Gem
Twenty players divided into five teams compete in the original reality competition format that turns Canada into a giant obstacle course. The season begins in St. John’s, NL and ends in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and BC, in Revelstoke and Vancouver Island. Local players include Daniel Ginnane, a stuntman and former MMA fighter; Jacqueline Le, wellness coach; Courtney Copoc-Hopkins, educational counselor and former competitive gymnast; and Paul Kobilke, a transit worker.

Keith Barker’s play follows a close-knit family dealing with the trauma of an unexpected loss. However, things get weird when a fox pays a visit. A review of a production of the play in Saskatoon earlier this year notes that the script “weaves beautifully between the real and the surreal” and calls the story “beautiful” and “moving.” Barker was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for English Drama for the play.
YVR Live Screen Scene @ VFS
When: April 27 at 7 p.m.
Where: VFS Café, 390 West Hastings St., Vancouver

It’s a mini Vancouver Fan Expo! Sci-fi TV stars Amanda Tapping (Stargate SG-1, Sanctuary), Lexa Doig (Andromeda, Continuum), Rukiya Bernard (Yellowjackets, Van Helsing) and Ryan Robbins (Riverdale, Sanctuary) join podcast host Sabrina Rani Furminger for a recording. of the latter’s YVR Screen Scene Podcast in front of an audience. After the taping, attendees are invited to purchase drinks at the VFS Café bar and take photos on the red carpet. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Ukrainian Canadian Defense Group’s Children of Fallen Heroes Rehabilitation Program.

Seven characters arrive at the house of someone they only know through the Internet. What follows is a psychological thriller that explores the dangers of social media. Written and directed by Valerie Methot, I Know Your Secret continues Some Assembly Theatre’s mandate of facilitating collaborations between young people and professional artists. The young creators include Ciara Wilkinson, Ayden Ramzan, Alastair Hamann, Arlo Lim, Ariyan Ramzan, Phoenix Lee, Greta Bradsher, Isobel Galsworthy, Skyler Lee, Lily Truesdell, Von Lochan, Victor Chow and Praveen Mohadevan.
