For the first time since 2019, the CHL Memorial Cup returns.
After COVID caused the tournament to be canceled in 2020 and 2021, the competition returns with four of the best teams in Canadian junior hockey to be crowned the best of the 2021-22 season.
The Memorial Cup pits the winners of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a fourth host team.
This year’s tournament will be held in Saint John, NB with games kicking off on Monday, June 20.

Where is the 2022 Memorial Cup?
- Host city: Saint John, N.B.
- Event: TD Station
Saint John is the host city for the 2022 Memorial Cup. All games will be played at TD Station, the home of the Sea Dogs.
The club won the bid to host the 2022 tournament over the Quebec Remparts. It is the first time that Saint John organizes the CHL tournament.
Who is in the 2022 Memorial Cup?
The four teams competing in the Memorial Cup are the winners of the OHL (Hamilton Bulldogs), WHL (Edmonton Oil Kings), and QMJHL (Shawinigan Cataractes), plus a predetermined host team (Saint John Sea Dogs).
Edmonton Oil Kings
The Oil Kings are competing in the Memorial Cup for the third time in club history, and the first time since the team won it all in 2014. They were the winners of the 2022 WHL Championship.
After finishing the regular season as the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, Edmonton made it through the first three rounds, sweeping the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Red Deer Rebels before defeating No. 1 seed Winnipeg Ice in just five games. In the WHL Championship, the Oil Kings defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds in six games, winning the franchise’s third WHL title.
It’s a team packed with the NHL’s top prospects, including Dylan Guenther (No. 9 pick in 2021 by Coyotes), Jake Neighbors (No. 26 pick in 2020 by Blues), Kaiden Guhle (No. 16 pick in 2020 by Canadiens) and Sebastian Cossa (No. 15 pick in 2021 by Red Wings).
hamilton bulldogs
The Bulldogs are back at the Memorial for the second time in the last three tournaments, their only two appearances in Memorial Cup history. They just won their second OHL championship.
Hamilton was the best team during the regular season, and they showed it again in the OHL playoffs. The Bulldogs outclassed the competition in the first three rounds, sweeping the Peterborough Petes, Mississauga Steelheads and North Bay Battalion to clinch the championship. Facing the Windsor Spitfires, the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, the two went the distance, playing seven games before Hamilton cruised to a 6-1 victory to win the title.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs are 2022 draft-eligible players Logan Morrison and Avery Hayes, plus Mason McTavish, the No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft.
Shawinigan Falls
Shawinigan returns to the Memorial Cup for the first time since 2012, when he won it as the host city. This year marks the club’s third appearance in the tournament following their QMJHL title.
The Cataractes swept the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and Gatineau Olympiques in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, Shawiningan defeated the Quebec Remparts 3-2 to advance to the championship, where they defeated the Charlottetown Islanders 4-1 in a best-of-seven series.
At the helm of the Cataractes are two first-round picks in Mavrik Bourque (No. 30 in 2020 by the Stars) and Xavier Bourgault (No. 22 in 2021 by the Oilers).
San Juan sea lions
The Sea Dogs are the host team for the 2022 tournament and get an automatic bid as one of four teams. This is the fourth time the club has played in the Memorial Cup.
Saint John finished as the No. 3 seed in the QMJHL Eastern Conference, but fell in the first round 3-2 to Rimouski Oceanic, losing 4-3 in overtime in Game 5.
William Dufour, a fifth-round pick by the Islanders in 2020, led the team in scoring this season with 116-plus points in 66 games. Josh Lawrence had 101 points.
Who has won the Memorial Cup in the past?
While the four-team format has only been around since 1983, the Memorial Cup dates back to 1919.
The three-team format with the three winners of the CHL leagues began in 1972. Since that inception, the WHL has won 19 times; the OHL has won 17; and the QMJHL has won 12 .
Of the active teams, the Oshawa Generals have the most Memorial Cup titles, with five. Here’s a look at all the winners since 2000:
