TRAGEDY. The man was 50 years old / The Washington Post
Maryland authorities reported that the judge accused of using a hidden video camera to record children in a bathroom, shot himself on Friday after federal agents headed to arrest him.
The context: According to the investigation, Jonathan Gary Newell, 50, who was serving as a circuit court judge in Caroline County, swallowed the SD memory of the camera with which he had recorded the minors.
- The incident occurred when he was interrogated for the first time last July. Back then, he said he should go charge his phone.
- With the permission of the authorities, he locked himself in his room, where he took the memory and ingested it.
What do they say?: “The investigator heard a loud, distinguishable, ‘cracking’ sound in Newell’s mouth area,” an FBI agent noted in a criminal complaint. “After another minute or two, the investigator heard the same ‘crack’ again in Newell’s mouth, followed by him drinking from a cup located on his dresser.”
- With a court order to perform CT scans, the study showed that the memory card was in Gary Newell’s body.
- This Friday, “upon entering the residence, agents found Newell suffering an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said the United States attorney’s office in Maryland.
