Republican Senators Marco Rubio (Florida) and Mitt Romney (Utah) will reintroduce the New Parents Act, which creates a voluntary paid parental leave option for new parents to use a portion of their Social Security after of the birth or adoption of a child.
The bill also gives families the flexibility to use their benefits in the way that works best for their home, by allowing parents to combine their permits or transfer them to one parent, the senators reported in a note from press this Wednesday, September 15.
Many parents, especially those with low incomes, will be able to finance three months of leave or more under the New Parents Act.
“Our economic policies must reflect our values and, right now, too many young working families are being left behind,” said Marco Rubio.
The Florida senator added: “We can support both stay-at-home moms and dads without raising taxes or expanding the federal bureaucracy.”
Romney, for his part, stated: “American families face increased financial pressure, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic; and the marriage and birth rates are at an all-time low. “
