Manufacture of transportation equipment in Nuevo León has not exceeded figures reached in pre-pandemic

Monterey, NL. In 2021, the state’s manufacturing industry exceeded the sales levels it had in 2019, except for some subsectors that continue with a negative balancesuch as the manufacture of transportation equipment, indicates an analysis carried out by the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) local, with figures of Dating Nuevo Leon and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.

The transportation equipment manufacturing subsector of the automotive industry represents 23% of total manufacturing sales and maintains a contraction of -9.5% compared to the levels reached in 2019.

Coparmex Nuevo León indicated that it is concerned that the automotive industry will not return to the levels reached before the pandemic, since it represents 25% of Nuevo León’s total exports.

In 2021 the exports from Nuevo León amounted to 41,497.2 million dollarswhich meant an increase of 20.24% compared to 2020, according to Inegi data.

However, in terms of employment, at the end of 2021 this manufacturing branch -automotive- exceeded the number of formal workers it had in 2019 by 2,077, adding a total of 106,432 jobs.

Cecilia Carrillo López, director of Coparmex Nuevo León, explained that the recovery of 15 of the 20 manufacturing branches of the state was mainly driven by external demand.

He added that in the case of the automotive industry, it was one of the branches that faced the greatest problems in its supply chain during 2021, at the international level, he added.

Other branches affected

The sector of leather and fur tanning and finishing, and manufacturing of leather, fur and substitute materials had a drop of -39.0%, compared to 2019.

The manufacture of clothing had a decline of -22.6%; the manufacture of textile products, andexcept clothing showed a decrease of -5.1%against 2019.

Another manufacturing subsector that is still below 2019 is the beverage and tobacco industry. Its sales in 2021 were -3.8% lower than what it had in the pre-pandemic.

“All sectors are important, however, some have more weight than others due to their participation in the markets. We are concerned about the situation of all these industries, but in particular the automotive industry because it is a highly exporting and employer of labor,” said Cecilia Carrillo.
