RCMP responded to the Bonnyville Healthcare Center on the evening of Feb. 21 after medical staff reported the death of a 17-day-old baby boy who had been brought to the hospital for treatment.

Investigators ruled the baby’s death suspicious and handed the case to the Alberta RCMP major crimes unit. An autopsy later deemed the death a homicide.

On Sunday, Cpl. Deanna Fontaine said a 29-year-old man has been charged with a manslaughter in relation to the baby’s death. He was arrested Saturday.

Fontaine said the man knew the baby and lived in the same home as the child in Glendon. She did not specify whether there is a family relationship.

The accused, Blair David Johnson, was taken into custody and has an appearance in Bonnyville Provincial Court Tuesday.

The baby was not identified.

Bonnyville is located about 250 km northeast of Edmonton.
