“A protest involving a large number of agricultural vehicles and equipment is blocking Emerson Port of Entry. No traffic can pass, either northbound or southbound. The port of entry is closed. Please avoid the area,” Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) tweeted Thursday morning.

The province’s Department of Transportation confirmed an “event” was taking place on Highway 75 near the border between the two countries, signaling possible delays for motorists wishing to cross.

RCMP spokesman Sergeant Paul Manaigre told Global News that the blockade is illegal under traffic laws.

“They want to make a statement, we have the right to let them make that statement, but at some point this discussion has to lead to progress at some point,” he said. “They’re not helping themselves if they’re stopping other truckers from working.”

Sergeant Manaigre hopes protest organizers will agree to unblock traffic as his officers attempt to broker a peaceful solution.
