A man in his 40s from the Beauce region was killed early Saturday after he apparently lost control of his snowmobile.

Emergency services arrived on the scene after they were called around 2:45 am by a woman who had joined the man on their snowmobile ride. When he disappeared and failed to catch up with her, she went to look for him and found him off the trail.

The pair were riding on Trail 25 in St-Théophile, near the border of Maine in the Chaudière-Appalaches region. The man was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead, said Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Hélène Nepton.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
