Man charged with assault for attack on teenage girl caught on video in Newfoundland

ST. JOHN’S, NL –

Police in Newfoundland say they have charged a 56-year-old man from St. John’s in connection with an assault caught on video of a teenage girl.

Eighteen-year-old Asmahan Al Salloum recorded a video of a man hitting her 15-year-old sister Malak across the head on May 7.

Al Salloum says she and her sister were disposing of garbage outside their workplace when the man approached them yelling racist slurs.

The video shows the man screaming, “I don’t know what you’re up to!” before hitting Malak, causing her to stumble sideways.

On Monday, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary published on social media a still shot of the video, asking for the public’s help identifying the man.

Police say the suspect has been charged with one count of assault and will appear in court at a later date.
