Man arrested for threatening NL health minister over mask mandate

Newfoundland and Labrador police say they arrested a 64-year-old man for threatening the provincial health minister at his home over the pandemic mask rules.

A press release today from the RCMP in Gander, NL, says the force received a report around 6:15 pm Tuesday about a man who had shown up at the home of Health Minister John Haggie, “screaming and threatening to hurt himself. “

The statement said the threats were related to provincial public health rules that require everyone over the age of five to wear a mask in closed public settings.

The Mounties say the man has been released under multiple conditions and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date on charges of making threats.

Meanwhile, health officials in the province are reporting five new cases of COVID-19 today.

They say in a press release that all but one of the new infections can be traced back to previously known cases or international travel, while the remaining infection is still under investigation.

This Canadian Press report was first published on December 8, 2021.
