The Office of the National Assembly, which manages the legislature, approved the imposition of the passport on Thursday night, with nine members of the Avenir Québec and Liberals Coalition voting in favor, and two members of Québec solidaire and Parti Québécois against.

The other opposition parties opposed the requirement because the public health department did not recommend it. “From an epidemiological point of view, I have no clues” that would lead to recommend its imposition, said Thursday the director of public health Horacio Arruda.

The rule will take effect 21 days after its publication, which should be on Friday, according to a source close to the record.

“It is important that parliament lead by example,” explained government whip Éric Lefebvre.
