Maduro orders investigation of previous opposition-controlled parliament

Caracas. The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, ordered the pro-government deputies to investigate the management of the Parliament that was under the control of the opposition until January 2021.

After declaring “illegitimate” the legislative election of December 2020 in which the ruling party obtained the majority of the National Assembly, the opposition deputies a year ago changed a statute to extend the functions of the 2015 parliament, and on Monday they approved a new reform of the rule that extends its activities until January 2023.

With the change in the statute, the opposition leader, Juan Guaidó and other members of the political organizations, continue to control Venezuela’s assets abroad, such as the US refiner, Citgo.

“The congress has to open an investigation to the imperialist National Assembly (…) of how they distribute the loot that they have left from the appropriation of the wealth,” said the president in a transmission on state television, in which he questioned changes in the statute of the opposition.

Guaidó is ratified

The leader Juan Guaidó was ratified last Monday by the fractured opposition as “in charge of the presidency” of Venezuela for another year.

The outlook is not encouraging for the 38-year-old leader, with low levels of popularity after three years without having real power and without fulfilling his promise to displace Maduro. In addition, he faces an opposition faction convinced that the strategy must be rethought.
