Madison Cawthorn remains implicated in possible crimes

It looks like both Democrats and Republicans are ready for representation madison Cawthorn, who has been on a truly remarkable spree in recent months, to be held accountable for… one of his many potential crimes. In a letter on wednesdayDemocrats bennie thompson Y bonnie watson-coleman called on the Transportation Security Administration to use “the full extent” of its enforcement actions against people like Cawthorn, who on Tuesday was caught (for the second time!) bring a loaded firearm through an airport security checkpoint. On the same day, the Republican senator from North Carolina Thom Tillis, who backs Cawthorn’s main challenger, called for an investigation into Cawthorn for insider trading. “Insider trading by a member of Congress is a serious betrayal of his oath,” Tillis tweeted. “There needs to be a thorough, bipartisan investigation into the matter by the House Ethics Committee.”

Cawthorn has yet to respond to the insider trading allegations, but he did appear to lambast Republicans like Tillis in a Thursday morning tweet. “You can’t Drain the Swamp effectively without firing all RINOs”, he wrotebefore retweeting a follower’s post claiming that “the swamp [is] so desperate to take [Cawthorn].” (Cawthorn’s office did not immediately respond to vanity fairrequest for comments.)

All of this comes after the Republican leader gave Cawthorn a stern talk. Kevin McCarthy last month for feigning moral outrage over allegations that Republican lawmakers snorted cocaine in front of him and invited him to orgies, Cawthorn later claims. accepted it was largely invented. (just last week released politician leaked party photos of him wearing women’s lingerie.) Tillis threw his support behind Cawthorn’s main challenger, North Carolina State Senator Chuck Edwards, after the “cocaine” and “orgy” controversy. A Tillis-linked super PAC has already spent more than $300,000 ad attacking Cawthorn in preparation for the May 17 race primaries, Axios reported In the past week.

Cawthorn became the latest member of Congress to face accusations of insider trading for promoting an alleged pump-and-dump cryptocurrency scheme, according to a report from the Washington Examiner. In December, the 26-year-old publicly bragged about his involvement with the Let’s Go Brandon cryptocurrency, a meme coin whose name derives from a slogan that mocks Joe Biden. The next day, the racing team of brandon brown—a NASCAR driver who, by the way, inspired the saying “go, Brandon,” announced that Brown would be partnering with the Let’s Go Brandon coin for the 2022 season, causing a 75% increase in the value of the coin, according to the Examiner. Reportedly, at its peak, the combined value of each Let’s Go Brandon coin exceeded $570 million. (Reportedly, NASCAR to turn off sponsorship deal in early January, and by February the value of the coin had plummeted, a drop that Let’s Go Brandon’s James Koutoulas reclaimed was also caused by some of the major owners of the currency disposing of their holdings en masse, the Examiner noted.)

What reported by InsiderCawthorn also apparently ran afoul of federal conflict-of-interest statutes by failing to disclose his investment in the coin; lawmakers have a 30-day window to submit transaction reports on their holdings of a given cryptocurrency. If Cawthorn is found to have violated the ethics rule, he could be required to pay a small fine. (However, Insider also pointed out that Cawthorn may have lied about investing in the Let’s Go Brandon coin. Cawthorn has continued to advertise the cryptocurrency on social media and made promotional appearances at Let’s Go Brandon coin events, according to the Examiner.)

the rookie legislator warned his Instagram followers on Tuesday that the “establishment” is attacking him in a “coordinated drip campaign,” adding, “They’re going to post an attack article every day or two just to try and kill us with a kill per 1,000 cuts , and that’s really his main strategy.” Cawthorn is up for reelection in North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District.
