Lumen Technologies plans to sell satellite internet to the industry in Mexico in 2022

The network infrastructure company Lumen Technologies (before Century Link) advanced what he plans to offer satellite internet services in Mexico in 2022, especially for industrial sectors As the oil and that of the mining.

This service will allow the company to reach remote areas of the Mexican Republic, since until now it has focused on the installation of networks in large metropolitan areas such as Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Queretaro.

“All the studies have already been concluded. We already have the information from our hub and the satellite that we are going to be using, “he said in an interview. Jaime Duran, director of Lumen Connectivity Products.

The satellite services that Lumen plans to offer next year will be destined to industrial facilities, such as oil platforms, mines and also to other types of services, such as banking.

Permits and pandemic

Although the company planned to complete the installation of its metropolitan networks of optical fiber in the 15 main cities of the country, both the Covid-19 pandemic as the delay in obtaining government permits have delayed this process.

“To build a metropolitan network in some of the main cities we have had to ask permission from many authorities, in some cases up to 20 different entities. It’s difficult to advance at the pace we want because of that, ”Durán said.

To this is added that the health emergency caused by the coronavirus pandemic led to the closure of both some government entities and the Industrial facilities of some of his clients.

Despite these interruptions and delays, the company has managed to connect several of the data centers of companies such as KIO Networks, Equinix and Triara from Telmex, and is in the process of connecting other large data centers such as the Brazilian ones Once time and Ascenty in the state of Queretaro.

Connectivity and 5G

Together with its subsidiary Level 3, Lumen Technologies is one of the companies that have installed many of the connectivity points between Mexico, the United States and Latin America. Between both companies they manage the cable connections that connect the country through the Pacific, in Mazatlán and Tijuana and Los Angeles, California, and also interconnect with the United States in three land crossings: Tijuana-San Diego; Monterrey-Laredo and Monterrey McCallen.

In 2021, the company added a node of internet IP in Mazatlan that strengthens its content networks (CDN), which are those intended for the transmission of content in streaming and of video game for companies like Netflix, HBO and Disney and that currently have a capacity of 10 terabytes.

Durán confesses that although 5 years ago the situation of the network infrastructure in Mexico was frankly behind schedule, in recent times there has been an explosion in the construction of this type of infrastructure; in addition to that now it is promoted that different companies share their networks.

“The evolution of the market has been very impressive. Before a network that would have taken them a long time to build, now it takes us a year and a half ”, he said.

The manager warns that the capillarity of fiber optic networks still does not allow to take advantage of the capacity of the networks of fifth generation (5G) in Mexico, this process will take an average of five years, which is an accelerated time compared to other countries.
