The Hamilton LRT project has gone one step further.

On Wednesday morning, a brief ceremony was held inside the city hall, where representatives of the city and the province formally signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

Mayor Fred Eisenberger, Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney and Metrolinx CEO Phil Verster signed the document, which will leave the city in charge of daily maintenance and operating costs along the 14-kilometer LRT line. .

The federal and provincial governments have each committed $ 1.7 billion to the cost of construction.

Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas Liberal MP Filomena Tassi was also present for the signing.

The first stages of construction, including underground utility work, are expected to begin in 2022 along the LRT line, which will run between McMaster University and Eastgate Square.

The Hamilton city council voted, 11-3, earlier this month to sign the memorandum of understanding.
