An annual campaign that helps isolated seniors have a happier vacation hopes to bring together more volunteers to buy gifts.

Perry Lubberding, manager of the Oliver Square London Drugs store in downtown Edmonton, said Friday that there are still plenty of wish lists available in the Edmonton area.

“We still have multiple tags to pick up at many of the stores and we are certainly looking for support,” Lubberding said.

“If you walk into any London Drugs, they will have a Christmas tree in their store, usually in the front of the store. You go to that tree, you grab a tag, and you fulfill the wish list that’s there. “

Donated items also do not necessarily have to be purchased from a London Drugs store; the company said any new item that is not gift wrapped is acceptable.

This year’s campaign began on November 12 and will run until December 8. Lubberding said that while there are still many wish lists to be claimed, he is hopeful that Edmontonians will come together as they did last year.

“(Last year) we were a little worried at the beginning, how it was going to be approached. But it was a huge success last year. “

“Many older people were cut off by the pandemic and people couldn’t see them,” he said. “So this was a way of giving back and giving (the seniors) a really wonderful day and experience that maybe helped them get through a moment of loneliness.”

Many of the gift requests are straightforward: items like toilet paper, soap, and tissues – “Generally essential for many seniors.”

The program started in 2015, hoping to help 40 seniors with Operation Friendship Seniors’ Society. It has grown enormously, expanding year after year.

In 2020, London Drugs stores in Edmonton fulfilled requests for gifts from nearly 30,000 seniors.

“It is a wonderful program that we would like to continue to grow and we are very proud of.”
