Local recap: Fratmen reach OFC final after solid 47-3 win over Skyhawks

The St. Clair Fratmen secured a spot in the Ontario Football Conference final with a convincing 47-3 semi-final victory over the Quinte Skyhawks on Saturday at Acumen Stadium.

The Fratmen, who are undefeated in nine games this season and ranked second in the country, will host the London Beefeaters on Saturday in the OFC final.

“We did what we planned to do, which was score early and often and get the headlines without anyone hitting,” said Fratmen head coach Mike LaChance, whose team led 47-0 at the half. “Now the challenge begins with an outstanding team from London.”

Receiver Jared Hayes-Williams had five catches for 114 yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Michael Beale. Running back Jacob Savoni had eight carries for 76 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Dante Lewis had another St. Clair touchdown on an 87-yard kickoff return.

The saints take the bronze

The St. Clair Saints earned team bronze in the men’s division at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s national cross-country championships in Calgary on Saturday.

It marks the third consecutive championship that the Saints have won a medal with the men taking gold in 2018 and silver in 2019 with no competition in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The men’s team earned three runners All-Canadian status by finishing in the top 10. Tyler Jones led the way with a seventh place on the 8km course in a time of 25 minutes and 38 seconds for the fourth performance of All-Canadian of his career. Freshman Jacob Fitzpatrick was 8th at 25:43 and Rick Nepomuceno was 10th at 26:07. Freshman Matt Lafleur completed St. Clair’s scoring four runners with a 36th place in 28:36.

The women’s team placed eighth in the stands of the team led by Hailey Jones, who was 36th on the 6km course in 26:05. My Palumbo was 42nd at 26:15, Melody Knight came 46th at 26:24 and freshman Lily Pattinson completed St. Clair’s scoring four runners by finishing 62nd in 26:59.

Flyers drop legionnaires

The Leamington Flyers moved one spot out of first place with a 3-1 victory over the Sarnia Legionnaires on Saturday in the Western Conference game in the Greater Ontario Youth Hockey League.

Connor MacPherson scored a pair of goals for the second-place Flyers (12-4-0-0) and Noah Prudhomme scored Leamington’s other goal against the 9th-place Legionnaires (4-13-0-0). Goalkeeper Boy Piroski made 28 saves for the victory and also received an assist.

Canadians remain undefeated

The Lakeshore Canadiens were unbeaten on the season with a 4-2 win over the Mooretown Banners on Saturday in the Bill Stobbs Division game in the Provincial Youth Hockey League.

Bryce Scarlett, Trevor Larue, Adam Pizzo and Matthew Herniman scored individual goals and Eric Larue provided two assists for the Canadiens (11-0-0-0), who are in second place, two points behind Essex with four games in hand. . Goalkeeper Trevor Heslop made 32 saves to win against the Flags in third place (8-2-0-0).

Hockey man Lancer

Sean Olson’s power goal with 63 seconds remaining in regulation time led the University of Windsor Lancers to a 5-4 victory over visiting Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA men’s hockey action on Saturday.

Nolan Gardiner scored a pair of goals for the Lancers (3-1-0) while Anthony Stefano and Holden Wale added individual goals. Connor Matton had three assists against the Golden Hawks (2-2-0) while goalkeeper Noah Giesbrecht made 43 saves for the win.

Lancer Basketball Sweep

The University of Windsor Lancer men’s basketball team returned to .500 on Saturday with an 83-75 victory at Fairall Fieldhouse over the Waterloo Warriors, while the women’s team earned its first win of the season by beating Waterloo 71- 59.

For the men, Thomas Kennedy had 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Telloy Simon collected 21 points and 13 rebounds to set the pace for the Lancers (2-2). Shakael Pryce finished with 13 points for the Lancers against the Warriors (1-1).

For the women, Sofia Kennedy and Mariame Dehkissia each had 13 points for the Lancers (1-3). Maggie Denys finished with 12 points and Reighan Dales added 10 points for the Lancers against the Warriors (1-1).
