Local prosecutor will give protection to the son of an activist murdered in Puebla


A few days after the murder of the lawyer and activist, Cecilia Monzón Pérez, the Puebla State Attorney General’s Office reported that it has video recordings of before and after the attack, which is why it is considered to be a direct attack.

The Attorney General of Justice of Puebla, Gilberto Higuera Bernal, explained that in these videos it can be seen that two subjects on a motorcycle shot the feminist activist and lawyer, Cecilia Monzón, last Saturday in San Pedro Cholula, Puebla.

He added that the defender’s cell phone and other belongings were protected from the prosecution, as was the van in which she was traveling.

He also maintained that the FGE will provide protection to the lawyer’s son, while saying that they are already investigating whether the defender’s activities were related to the attack.

“Mrs. Cecilia was a very active lawyer in terms of litigation and there are a significant number of cases in which she intervened as a complainant, defendant and defender, as well as legal advisor to victims of family violence, but we are analyzing the entire context, all the cases and we are going to reach those responsible”, he concluded.

Previously, the governor of Puebla, Miguel Barbosa, maintained that the activist’s murder was perpetrated by “professional criminals” because of the way in which she was attacked.

In turn, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador condemned the murder, although he described it as an “execution.”

López Obrador referred that “it is a very painful issue. Since we have the information of what happened we are dealing with the serious problem, because it was an execution, it was hit men who murdered her without any doubt. They were about her.”

After condemning the murder of the lawyer and feminist activist Cecilia Monzón, the National Institute for Women (Inmujeres) called on the Puebla authorities to guarantee that the investigations are conducted with a gender perspective and to carry out all the necessary prevention measures. to protect the life, integrity, liberty and security of the human rights activists who reside in said entity.

This after describing Cecilia Monzón Pérez as a benchmark in the state for women to have access to justice, in addition to dedicating her life to defending cases of women in situations of violence or abuse and also had an outstanding political activity.

For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain condemned the murder of the activist who also had Spanish nationality.

“The Government of Spain asks the competent Mexican authorities, at the federal and state levels, to deploy all possible efforts to effectively protect human rights defenders so that they can carry out their work without putting their lives at risk.”
