The Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, has asked society to “implicate and condemn” the reception of ETA prisoners upon release from prison, as “a clear humiliation for the victims and a contempt”.
In an interview with Radio Euskadi, Llop, visiting the Basque Country this Friday on the occasion of the meeting of the Governing Boards of the Bar Association in the capital of Biscay, referred to the ETA prisoners received in some streets of the Basque Country.
Noting that justice to be fair has to be “centered and focused on the victims”, on which you have to put “the focus”, the minister has defended that restorative justice is something that is being worked on at the European level and an issue contemplated in the preliminary draft of the criminal procedure law.
“We must tend to that meeting in order to improve our coexistence, our democratic quality, turning to the victims and victims’ organizations that do a great job,” he stressed.
In reference to the so-called ‘ongi etorris’ to ETA prisoners upon their release from prison, the minister highlighted the inauguration of the Vitoria Victims Memorial and the work carried out by the Government delegate in the Basque Country, Denis Itxaso, who “communicates it to the Prosecutor’s Office every time there is an act of these characteristics.”
“It is evident that this supposes – the receptions – a clear humiliation for the victims, a contempt and that we must put the focus on the victims,” he denounced.
Likewise, he has considered that it is necessary to ask society, as “the one who put an end to ETA’s terrorism”, to “imply and condemn” this type of action. “This is how the Government of Spain is acting,” he insisted.

On the other hand, he has referred to the celebration of 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a “horrible fact that frightened us all and made us understand that we have to be very serious about terrorism.”
“We cannot remain equidistant in the face of the pain and suffering of the victims. We must do everything on our part to fight, from where we touch, against terrorism, as was done here and it was possible to defeat ETA terrorism, in Spain and especially in the Basque Country “, has ended.
