LISTEN: How does school closures really impact children and parents?

Parents, health professionals and teachers discuss the impact of virtual school on children, the real risk of the virus for children and how to weigh all the considerations

Maclean’s hosted a Twitter space on January 7 to talk about school closures due to COVID-19: the impact of those closures on children, the low risk of the virus to children, and how to properly balance all considerations.

We invited Dr. Kwadwo Kyeremanteng, chief of the intensive care department at Ottawa Hospital, Matt Gurney, a journalist and father who wrote this piece for TVO discussing the dubious rationale for school closures and Denise Balkissoon, Ontario bureau chief for The Narwhal and also a mother. Shannon Proudfoot, head of the Ottawa office for Maclean’s, a parent and author of this column on the high cost of school closures, was the host, and we were fortunate to have several teachers weigh in with their perspective.
