Liberty Mobile develops its networks with the “eclipse” of its 3G in Puerto Rico

Liberty Mobile announced today that it will be the first mobile service provider in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands to complete the technological evolution by shutting down the 3G network that has been providing service for over 20 years.

This evolution, which will take place on 22 February 2022, will usher in more advanced network services, higher speeds and a better consumer experience.

The disengagement of the 3G network is taking place at most major mobile service providers in the United States and Puerto Rico as part of the organic transformation of technology and to make way for more advanced network services, including 5G.

Similar transitions have occurred in the past when providers switched off their 2G networks about ten years ago to upgrade to 4G. Fifth generation or 5G, the latest technology, launched in 2019 in restricted areas of the United States and is now available across the country, including Puerto Rico.

“It’s part of our plan to continue to improve the network and provide a better experience in general for mobile users on the island, and to be more efficient in using the spectrum,” explains Victor Vera, senior director of RAN engineering at Liberty Mobile … “Providers need to turn off older technologies such as 2G and 3G from time to time to free up spectrum and infrastructure to support and expand new services such as 5G.”

The CEO said the company has identified a small number of customers who have old electronic devices such as 3G mobile phones. These devices will not work after February 22, 2022.

In addition to cell phones, Vera added that other old devices such as smartwatches, tablets, medical devices, vehicle emergency services and home security systems that use 3G technology will also stop working. These customers can contact their service providers to obtain the necessary updates.
