A recent letter to the editor suggesting that unvaccinated individuals requiring COVID-related medical care should not be covered by our Medical Services Plan and charged for the costs of care is a very slippery slope that runs counter to the general idea of universal health care. .
Under that logic, we should leave overdosed drug addicts who cannot afford treatment to die on the street and deny health insurance coverage to anyone who smokes or drinks alcohol, does not wear a seat belt, or drives at high speed, are overweight, choose an unhealthy lifestyle, or have a medical condition that prevents them from getting vaccinated. The suggestion that anyone who makes bad or unpopular decisions be denied coverage would mean that most of us would be billed for medical care.

Perhaps we should address the real problem of stressed and overworked medical staff and a shortage of services as a result of the chronic shortage of nurses and doctors. This has been going on for years, and the government’s decision to ration healthcare by refusing to address the problem and opening more educational spaces for these important professions has hit the wall and been exposed by the pandemic.
We need to end the anger, hatred, division and discrimination caused by the pandemic and return to the concept of treating everyone with some dignity and respect.

Re: 10 paid sick days is the correct prescription for BC
While I agree with a doctor’s opinion that sick pay is very good, having worked at a company that had five days of sick pay each year, I can’t remember how many times I heard people say, “Oh! , he was not really sick. I just needed time off ”, and they were paid. Lots of people will cheat and businesses will be hit the hardest by this expense.

Re: Restaurant actions put community health and employment at risk
Like the letter writer Robert Tritschier, my wife and I have frequented Rolly’s restaurant many times as we passed through Hope on our way to Edmonton, or Prince George, and vice versa.
Their menus are impressive and well prepared. My favorite option on the menu was the poached salmon. Now I wonder if “poached” meant how salmon was cooked or how it was fished. Maybe they should change their name to something more appropriate, like Maverick Restaurant.
It has been said that there is no such thing as bad publicity. We will see if this is true for this particular restaurant.
