article content

Journalist Dan Fumano wrote an incredibly honest, up close and personal story about Brady’s descent into drug addiction. Masking their emotional pain with street drugs and descending into the lowest levels of hell itself. His father, Brian Leavold, searching for him among the fallen bodies of the Downtown Eastside for answers. Kudos to Brian for keeping the faith in the worst possible odds.

In the end, love and redemption met at the end of darkness. There are scars that cannot be painted, only examined and tested. Dan Fumano deserves credit for this bold and important story. Write more like this. shine a light Tell the truth.

Brady’s story hits close to home

Having graduated from high school with Brady, this story hit home with me. Although I didn’t know it well, Port Coquitlam is not a big place and I had heard bits and pieces over the years from friends. I was glad that Brady was able to share his side of the story and that he is doing better. It is very important to bring mental health, sexual violence, and substance abuse issues out into the open so that others who may be struggling with these same issues can know that they are not alone.

I think Brady will have a huge impact on others by being so open and honest, and he should be proud of himself for how far he’s come.

hard times for everyone

Re: Local restaurant rent increase was unreasonable

In response to the January 12 letter accusing landlords of imposing unreasonably large rent increases, what many people don’t know is that most commercial building tenants are subject to a triple net lease. What that means is that the landlord passes almost all of the costs to the renter/tenant. It usually means building insurance, property taxes, and other similar expenses.

This year, we saw insurance rates skyrocket. Property values went crazy. If you own a building, these charges only flow to the tenant. I hope we see many more closures for businesses that are barely making it due to COVID. Insurance rates have doubled for many buildings, and with property value increases of 30 to 40 percent, we can only expect property taxes to skyrocket as well.

Difficult times for everyone.
