Letters to The Province, April 8, 2022: Olympic plebiscite encouraged

Let’s think in terms of sharing space and ideas so that all involved feel part of this plan. I encourage a plebiscite on the ballot this upcoming October.

Everybody who had the privilege of being in Vancouver during the Olympics can attest to the vibrancy and energy that still exists in the city today. Hosting the Games was an electric experience for our city and the entire nation. First Nations will always be apart of our heritage and legacy. Vancouver taxpayers also need to feel included in this process, should the Olympic Games return to Vancouver.

Let’s think in terms of sharing space and ideas so that all involved feel part of this plan. I encourage a plebiscite on the ballot this upcoming October.

Drivers need to understand how roundabouts work

I am tired of being nearly run off the road by drivers who don’t understand how roundabouts work. To put it simply, cars approaching the roundabout must yield to cars already in the roundabout. I have had to slam on the brakes so many times when cars drive into the circle right in front of me. If I honk, I then get a look like I’m the one at fault.

“A roundabout is an intersection with an island at its center that is without stop signs or electronic signals. Entrance into a roundabout is controlled by a simple rule: yield to traffic in the roundabout before continuing counter-clockwise around the central island. Intersections controlled by roundabouts are increasingly becoming a go-to design for improved safety and traffic flow.” (British Columbia Driving and Transport.)

Time for the United Nations to step up

I agree with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy when he questions the lack of “motivation” from the United Nations. The Russians are committing genocide. Innocent civilians being massacred over what? Putin wants more land? The destruction of their country is ridiculous. How are they ever going to rebuild?

When the UN went into Rwanda, it was commanded by Canada’s own Lt.-Gen. Romeo Dallaire and, at the time, didn’t get a lot of support from the other UN members. It’s time that the UN stepped up and put an end to the atrocities.
