I would like to thank Steve Ewen for his story on Canada’s women’s softball team and program. I find it unfortunate that they haven’t received the credit they deserve for being truly outstanding representatives of Canada. They have shown class, dignity, hard work and respect in their quest to display their considerable skills to the softball community, not to mention their outstanding results against the best in the world. I’m one proud Canadian every time they step on the field.

I would also like to commend Ewen for pointing out the incredible accomplishments of Mel Matthews. I will say that the first time I saw Matthews play she was 10 years old playing catcher during the Mite Provincial Championships. I know this because my daughter played in the same tournament. She played catcher then and I have to be honest, my eyes popped out of my head when I saw her positioning behind the plate. At 10 years of age she was framing pitches. At 10. That’s crazy. Right there and then I could only imagine the future for her. She didn’t disappoint.

She in my humble view is the epitome of what every Canadian should aspire to. She’s an incredible example of today’s modern woman. We need more like her. I have no doubt that her children will not only be excellent athletes, but will also be even better human beings.

Again, thanks for an excellent article that shines on Canadian athletes.

‘Relief’ from soaring gas prices

I find it difficult to conceive the length of time it took the governing body to fabricate such a feeble attempt at “relief” from soaring gasoline prices in BC

Drivers who pay for car insurance through ICBC will receive a $110 rebate to alleviate the increase in gas prices. Commercial drivers will receive a $165 rebate and drivers of electric vehicles will also receive a $110 rebate.

We in BC pay the highest cost for fuel in North America due to taxes. Furthermore, I don’t see EVs at the gas pumps. It’s a statistical fact that BC has the highest number of electrical vehicles insured in Canada. So, $110 is a bonus to those who can afford to own an EV.

The “relief” offered to residents who are struggling is beyond logic.

This action reminds me of childhood when you lost a tooth and placed it under your pillow. The fairy replaced it with 25 cents. The money was spent quickly on whatever, but in the end you were still missing a tooth. This is the same scenario; the premier of this province is playing the tooth fairy.

Voting in Canada: If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Re: Liberal idea of three-day polling surprises Elections Canada.

I read in The Province that now the government wants to have a go at tinkering with how and when we vote.

Voting and getting results in the same day has been the gold standard for eons. Why does Prime Minister Trudeau think that he can come up with a better way. Why not let Elections Canada do their stellar job, like they have always done. My thoughts are: If it ain’t broke, why fix it?
