YOU NAILED IT DOUG

I am the daughter of immigrants and I fully agree with Doug Ford’s recent comments. When my father immigrated to Canada, he was sent to work on a farm near London, Ontario. It was hard work, long hours, and the meals on the first farm I worked were not abundant. Then he worked on the hydroelectric lines until he was able to get the job for which he was trained. My mother was a nanny who worked six days a week for her room and board. Then he went to work in a factory (maquiladora) sewing. As a landowning immigrant, he was expected to work hard, long hours and where he was needed, usually not in the big cities. Things have improved a lot for immigrants and for good reason. You just have to look at Denmark, where citizens were recently asked to work a longer work week because their excellent lifestyle can no longer be maintained. The problem is that some immigrants arriving in the country are not working but have access to everything Denmark has to offer: free tuition, excellent medical care, excellent care for the elderly, the list goes on. People who work pay taxes, and taxes are what keep a country’s economy running. My late father loved Canada more than any other country in the world. He welcomed all the new immigrants who contributed just like me. No need to apologize, Doug Ford, any smart Canadian will agree with you.

LOST FREEDOMS

I always considered myself a proud Canadian, even after living in the United States for the past five years. A visit to Toronto last Thanksgiving has changed my views. I have relatives who have fought for our freedoms in WWII, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and I served about 35 years in law enforcement. We willingly risk our lives to preserve that freedom. I was simply appalled at the suspension of liberties during my visit to Canada. Can you ever imagine that we would have to present our newspapers to go to a restaurant, a sports activity or even a movie? Wearing masks wherever you go. These actions remind us of the bygone days of the Soviet Union. These restrictions are totally unconstitutional and are signs of the socialist to come. My message to Canadians is very simple. Wake up before it’s too late and stop being lemmings. That cliff is approaching faster than you think.

WHO MADE YOU REINA CHRYSTIA?

Regarding “The Travel Test Stays, Says Freeland” (The Canadian Press Oct 15): Who does Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland think is? Queen of Canada? Sounds like a dictator. Without parliamentary approval, it states that Canadian travelers must show negative test results to re-enter Canada. Regardless of the superpowers the deputy prime minister thinks she has, she cannot decide whether Canadians can re-enter Canada. Absurd and illegal.
