Leafs sign defenseman Mark Giordano to two-year extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed veteran defenseman Mark Giordano to a two-year contract extension.

The 38-year-old Giordano, who was born in Toronto, will make $800,000 (US) per season.

Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas acquired the three-time all-star from the Seattle Kraken before this past trade deadline, along with forward Colin Blackwell in exchange for two second-round draft picks and a third. Seattle retained 50 per cent of Giordano’s $6.75 million expiring contract.

Giordano spent the majority of his 16-year NHL career with the Calgary Flames before being selected by the Kraken in the expansion draft before last season, where he was named captain. He won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman with the Flames after scoring 17 goals and 57 assists in 79 games during the 2018-19 season.

Giordano recorded 12 points in 20 regular season games with Toronto down the stretch and added two assists in the seven-game playoff series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
