Lantic Sugar, refinery workers reach agreement in principle

Article content

In principle, an agreement has been reached between the management and the union representing the workers at the Lantic sugar refinery in Montreal.

In a brief statement, Rogers Sugar Inc. said the deal will be put to a ratification vote next week.

The refinery has about 200 unionized employees. Negotiations for a new contract began last winter in anticipation of the expiration of the existing contract in May.

On September 25, workers had voted 98 percent for an unlimited strike.

The union president, Benoît Desrosiers, had complained that the company was increasingly resorting to outsourcing at the factory.

Lantic Sugar is one of the largest sugar refineries in Canada and operates factories in Vancouver, Taber, Alberta and Montreal.
