The Parti Québécois must remain committed to independence ahead of next October’s provincial election despite disappointing poll numbers, its leader said Saturday.

If party members remain authentic and true to their convictions, they will win votes, Paul St-Pierre-Plamondon said during a national council meeting in Boucherville.

“We do not back down, we do not deviate, we do not apologize, we do not change our minds,” he said before receiving a standing ovation.

He said sovereignty is “necessary and urgent” and is the only way to move Quebec forward.

“As long as we refuse, even for a moment, to use the word independence, the truth is that Quebec will have no bargaining power,” he added. “Quebec will only get refusals from Ottawa and Quebec will, unfortunately, be condemned to linguistic and cultural decline.”

A recent Léger poll indicated the PQ had the support of only eight per cent of eligible voters.
