Killed by her son in a psychotic crisis: a woman from Baie-Saint-Paul met a horrible end


A 50-year-old met a horrible end, killed with a stove and knife by her son in a psychotic crisis in Baie-Saint-Paul in 2019, according to the coroner’s report.

Violaine Gagnon was 59 years old when she was found unresponsive in her home on rue Saint-Adolphe. The Sûreté du Québec quickly confirmed that it was a domestic homicide.

The victim’s son, Jean-Philippe Blais, was quickly arrested in connection with the murder. He was found not criminally responsible for the second degree murder, on account of mental disorder. He had immediately confessed all the alleged acts to the police.

Mme Gagnon was found dead in the afternoon in her bedroom, after her employer became concerned that she was absent without warning.

According to the coroner’s report, Ms.and Donald Nicole, the victim bore numerous traces of violence on the neck and head.

“The police investigation established that on August 3, 2019, around 4:18 a.m., the son of Mme Gagnon had taken a cast iron skillet from the kitchen of the residence, had gone to his mother’s room and had violently struck her on the head, while she was lying in bed. Subsequently, he returned to the kitchen to fetch a knife, went back to his mother’s room and stabbed her several times in the neck,” reads Ms.and Nicole.

The victim had several wounds on the face and neck, including a fatal one that reached the jugular vein and the carotid artery on the right. There was also significant blunt force trauma to the head, with bruising in the eye, forehead and mouth area.

Finally, M.me Gagnon suffered multiple facial and skull fractures, as well as an intracranial hemorrhage.

The victim lived with his son. His mental disorders were known. According to the report, a psychiatric examination carried out during his incarceration revealed that he suffered from psychotic disorders affecting his judgment.
