“A reasonable person, placed in the same situation, would have been aware of the risk created by his behavior: the reasonable people around him tried to dissuade him from driving,” said Judge Richard Marleau, declaring Karell Tanguay guilty all the way.

The tragedy dates back to July 15, 2018. After a day of partying on a boat with friends where she consumed alcohol, the young woman who will soon be celebrating her 26th birthday still took the wheel, with as a passenger her best friend Olivia Drozdoski Richardson.

Shortly after, the accused caused an accident on Route 132, in Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka in Montérégie, by hitting a couple who were returning from their chalet, seriously injuring them.

“The impact is of a rare violence. None of the four occupants escape unscathed. Olivia dies,” summed up the judge.

“She was the danger”

In his extensive 49-page decision, however, he concluded that Karell Tanguay was responsible for the collision and that she was impaired by alcohol.

“She was encroaching into the other lane. She was the danger,” said Judge Marleau.

The impact was violent on July 15, 2018 between the black Nissan Juke driven by Karell Tanguay and the blue Jeep Liberty which was coming in the opposite direction on Route 132, in Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka.

In defense, it was said during the pleadings that Karell Tanguay had a “normal” driving and that she had “promptly reacted” a second before the collision, demonstrating that she was “aware of her environment”.

The magistrate did not adhere to this version.

“It rather shows that she was deviating from her path, that this conduct was dangerous and that she does not see the danger,” said Judge Marleau.

Sentencing submissions will take place later this year, at a date that has not been determined.

The accused is the daughter of Yvon Tanguay, a veteran of the Hells Angels, member of the Montreal chapter.
