Juan Carlos Martel will direct the Lliure until 2024

The Board of Trustees of the Fundació del Teatre Lliure – Teatre Públic de Barcelona has decided to extend the director’s contract to Juan Carlos Martel until 2024. As a consequence of the cessation, suspension and restriction of the theatrical activity that has occurred in the last year by the pandemic derived from covid-19, andl Plenary of the Board of Trustees met last Friday, December 10 has agreed to extend the management contract until January 31, 2024, one more year, since its contract ended in 2023.

Juan Carlos Martel Bayod was hired as Director of the Teatre Lliure Foundation in January 2019, after being chosen by competition following the controversial resignation of Lluís Pasqual. The Board of Trustees of the Teatre Lliure Foundation considers that the development of the Director’s project has been clearly affected by the pandemic situation experienced, which has led to the cessation, suspension and restriction of theatrical activity from March 14, 2020 to October 2021, in which the restrictions have been completely lifted.

This exceptional situation has affected the provision of management services, which is why it has been decided to extend the contract for another year in order to be able to evaluate the new direction of the Teatre Lliure under the baton of Martel, wanting to connect with the young public, to open the theater to artists and companies of the new generations, among others.
