Joseph Canteloube, C. Sampson, Tapiola Sinfonietta, P. Rophé

The Chants d’Auvergne de Canteloube were popularized on record in the early 1970s by Victoria de Los Angeles (EMI) and later by Kiri Te Kanawa. Karina Gauvin also recorded them, but the iconic version remains that of Frederica von Stade (CBS Sony). It has been years since this repertoire seemed to have fallen into oblivion. But here, with Carolyn Sampson, the singer who has at the same time the timbre, the charm, the naturalness and the vocal stuff (compared to Karina Gauvin) that we could only dream of. When you add an “extralucid” sound recording of a transparent orchestra, ideally balanced with the voice, we quickly understand that we are dealing with a major record. Within the corpus of Songs, whose collection and orchestration occupied for 30 years the folk musician who died in 1957, Carolyn Sampson chose to interpret the 1re and 3e complete sets and tap into the 2e, 4e and 5e. Superb program, generous and perfectly arranged for a new reference version.
