José María Sánchez, the Vox deputy who only gets involved with women: ‘witch’, ‘chillona gallega’ …

José María Sánchez García had no plans to dedicate himself to politics but was used to speaking in public. His extensive experience as a judge, Professor and Lawyer of the European Court of Justice, however, have not managed to correct his ways when addressing other women deputies: this Tuesday he starred in a row in the Congress of Deputies when he called “witch” to the deputy of PSOE Laura Berja |. It was not the first time.

Only a few months before, in December 2020, Sánchez García called “chillona gallega” to the PP deputy from Ourense, Ana Vazquez, ‘popular’ spokesman for the Home Affairs Commission. The reason for the contempt was none other than Sánchez’s aversion to the deputy’s way of speaking. What was being discussed were the budget items dedicated to the Cortes Generales, specifically to their temporary staff.

Sánchez García was rejected by the ‘popular’ bench when he messed with Vázquez, to which the one from Vox continued: “Yes, I already know that this is machismoBy the way, Mrs. Cuca is here, and she can come out later to tell me. “He was referring to PP spokesperson Cuca Gamarra, who did not answer him, but Vázquez herself did.

The deputy was also a spokesman for the Constitutional Commission of Congress. There, in his numerous interventions, he always addressed the women at the table as “President” O “vice president”. On one occasion, in February 2020, in the middle of a plenary session in which the former Vice President of the Government appeared Carmen Calvo, Sánchez García made a gesture to light a cigar. Finally he was warned not to do it, and he put the cigar on the table next to a lighter.

Against civil marriage

Before dedicating himself to politics, Sánchez García was Professor of State Ecclesiastical Law at the University of Seville. In 2010 he participated in the II Congress of Catholic Jurists, where he gave a presentation on marriage. In his presentation, he assured that the institution had been “content void” and said it meant “nothing” in civil law. He also stated that “certain instances” intended to end marriage as understood from religion.

“[Al matrimonio] He has almost none of his essential notes such as irrevocability, unity, heterosexuality or the specific distinction with other types of legal ties such as de facto unions, “he said. The now politician also said that he would not be surprised that in Spain came to recognize the polygamous marriage and he claimed the union at the altar “as an anthropological consideration as a natural reality”, paraphrasing the pope emeritus Benedict XVI.
In addition to serving as Professor, Sánchez García is judge on leave and has developed his activity in prestigious international law firms such as Baker & McKenzie and Olswang. He was also a lawyer for the Court of Justice of the European Union and has a great heritage. In his last declaration of assets, he claimed to have several flats in Madrid, Alicante, La Coruña, as well as a rustic property in Huelva, several parking spaces and four vehicles. The money he had in his checking account was around 450.000 euros. Right now his salary is 86,000 euros per year. As a lawyer in the European court, he reached 162,000, tax-free.

He was elected as a Vox deputy by Alicante despite having been born in Madrid and never having lived in the eastern city. In an interview with a local media, he acknowledged that he did not feel bad about being called “nursery” and defended his ties with the town, where his family participates in a Hotel Meliá.

“Witch”

The last controversy of the Conservative deputy took place during the plenary debate on the penalization of those who harass women who intend to abort at the doors of the clinics. The proposal was presented by the PSOE and was opposed by Vox. The party echoed the slogan wielded by pro-life groups that consider that pray at the doors of these medical centers, while insistently informing the women who come to them, it is not harassment.

“Pray as much as you want …”, the socialist Laura Berja said in her speech from the rostrum. The sentence was interrupted by an abrupt sound: “Witch!”. Sánchez García tried to stop Berja from finishing the sentence: “Pray as much as you want, but let the women exercise their rights”.

The alternate president of the chamber Alfonso Rodríguez Gómez de Celis called the deputy’s attention up to three times. He asked him to withdraw the insult, but it was not taken for granted. He only answered: “I do not recall that he has told lies”. Thus, he was asked to leave the chamber, following the provisions of the regulations. Sánchez García, however, refused. He went down the stairs of the hemicycle and sat next to his party partner Marena Olona. Given the refusal, the president of the chamber temporarily suspended the session.
