Johnson receives information about parties in Downing Street during the pandemic

  • The prime minister on Thursday assured that he “in no way” delayed the publication of the report

  • He promised that once it is finished it will be published in its entirety

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, received the report this Monday on the alleged parties held during the worst moments of the pandemic in Downing Street, as confirmed by the British Executive itself. Johnson is scheduled to make a statement in the House of Commons from 3.30pm London time.

The report, or rather the reduced version of it, will be published on the official government website, but key details about what happened will be missing. The Metropolitan Police have asked the person in charge of the official investigation, Officer Sue Gray, not to include some of the key elements of what was discovered about the parties that took place during the Downing Street pandemic so as not to harm the final . result. In total, Sotland Yard is investigating 8 incidents allegedly held in Downing Street and Whithall (headquarters of government agencies) in violation of existing regulations during the restrictions in 2020 and 2021. The partial and non-final report released today is not expected to mention does not make name responsible for or participants in what happened, including the Prime Minister. The police investigation can take weeks or even months.

Johnson bought time and in his statement today he could announce changes to the official residence team and even some sort of code of conduct, including a ban on alcohol in the workplace. The decision of the Conservative parliamentary group to retain him as leader depends on his intervention, although for the moment it seems the rebellion has been postponed pending what the police say.

Criticism of the ‘premier’

Spokesmen for the prime minister indicated that Johnson spoke briefly with Gray yesterday and received an “update” on the investigation after 11 this morning.

Delivery of the document was delayed by Scotland Yard’s decision, which was announced last Tuesday, to open its own investigation and the request that Gray’s conclusions only “minimal references” to such events while police continued their investigations, amid a flurry of criticism against Johnson, whose political future is in the air as a result of the alleged celebrations.

Johnson assured Thursday that he was “in no way” delaying the release of the report.
