John Tavares is expected to return to the Leafs lineup tonight against the Flames, Jack Campbell to start.

John Tavares took his usual spot in the morning skate on Friday and will take warm-ups before tonight’s home game against Calgary – all positive signs that the Maple Leafs captain should return to the lineup after missing the final game.

“We will have (Joey Anderson) take the warm-up as well, but it looks like John will be back,” Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said at the morning skate before another “test”, this time against Calgary. Flames, who are off to a good start in the Western Conference.

Keefe also said that Jack Campbell will start in goal Friday, but did not reveal his goalkeeping plans for Saturday’s game at Buffalo.

But there’s a strong chance that Joseph Woll will make his Leafs and NHL debuts at Buffalo. Campbell has played in 12 of the Leafs’ 14 games to date, and while the Sabers got off to a good start this season, they are now 5-5-2 with a five-game losing streak.

“I think he’s been great,” Keefe said of Woll, who has come up for the Marlies, and in the backup role with the Leafs since Petr Mrázek suffered a groin injury last Saturday.

“He is a young man who has dedicated his time here in the organization … he has talent, and the opportunity for him (last week) has also been good for his development.”

Woll, 23, was selected in the third round in 2016, 62nd overall, from Boston College. He has spent the past three seasons with the Marlies, with a 20-24-3 record.

Tavares suffered a lower body injury in Monday’s game against Los Angeles; He was eliminated from Wednesday’s game in Philadelphia, but worked with the coaching staff for more than 40 minutes during Wednesday’s morning skating.

Toronto will face a Flames team that has made a strong start in the Western Conference on Friday. The Flames, third in the Pacific Division at 7-3-3, have posted a goal differential of plus 13, the second-highest in their conference.

“They’re playing tough, they haven’t given up much and they protect their goalie very well,” Keefe said. “Hopefully it will be a low-scoring game and it’s a real challenge for us.”

Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares is expected to return to the lineup tonight against the Flames.
