Jewish lawmaker demands apology from Justin Trudeau

A Jewish Conservative MP is demanding an apology from Justin Trudeau after he indirectly accused her of standing with people “who are wielding the swastika” during Question Period on Wednesday.

The whole thing took place during question period in the House of Commons, where the tone was particularly acrimonious on Wednesday.

During her speech, Melissa Lantsman, elected in Thornhill, Ont., accused the Prime Minister of “fanning the flames of an unwarranted national emergency” by calling protesters “often” being “misogynists,” “ racists” who “deny science”.

Ms. Lantsman wondered “where had gone” the Prime Minister who previously was more unifying.

“Conservatives can stand with people waving the swastika, they can stand with the Confederate flag, we [les libéraux] let’s choose to stand with the Canadians who deserve to be able to go to their jobs, to have their lives back. These illegal demonstrations must stop and they will stop, ”replied Justin Trudeau, to the cries of the opposing benches.

Stung to the quick by the Prime Minister’s remarks, a Conservative MP from Alberta, Dane Lloyd, twice demanded an apology from the Prime Minister. His wishes weren’t granted, with Mr. Trudeau hammering instead that people want to “get their lives back.”

House Speaker Anthony Rota called on MPs on both sides, ‘including the Prime Minister’, to stop using ‘inflammatory’ language.

Ms Lantsman communicated her dismay via Twitter later.

“I think the prime minister should think long and hard about his own story before he takes on a Jewish member of parliament and falsely accuses me of standing with a swastika. What a shameful and unworthy statement from a person in public office – he owes me an apology,” she said.

The climate in Parliament has become considerably tougher since the convoy arrived in Ottawa almost three weeks ago.

Since then, Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole has been shown the door by members of his caucus, while Quebec City-area Liberal MP Joël Lightbound has broken ranks with his party over the management of the pandemic, criticizing in passing the tone adopted by the government about people who refuse the vaccine against COVID-19.
