Jesús Mosquera: “After the audiences on Antena 3 nobody thought that ‘Toy boy’ could succeed”

Jesús Mosquera is one of the actors of the moment thanks to ‘Toy boy’. The Atresmedia series has once again demonstrated its solvency in Netflix and its second season has once again taken over the positions of the most seen on the platform. We spoke with the protagonist of the series from Nevalia, the Ron Barceló festival in the snow, where he has shared an adventure with many other influencers, actors and singers with whom he has begun to surround himself since in 2019 he decided to leave football matches for filming.

The second season of ‘Toy boy’ was recently released on Netflix and has once again been another hit. How do you live this boom?

Very happy, because after the first season we had to respond to all the affection of the public and the expectations that had been created. The whole team had to do a job of taking a step forward so that people felt satisfied with the new season. It has worked very well and we think you liked it. There is no greater recognition that the public likes. Very happy, really.

‘Toy boy’ premiered openly on Antena 3 and didn’t have much of an audience. Did you trust that it would work better on a platform? How did you experience that moment of uncertainty?

Well look, I’m not going to lie to you. After the audiences on Antena 3 and seeing how the series worked on platforms that came from outside, that is, they were not original products of the platforms, I can tell you that at no time did it cross anyone’s mind that what happened happened . It was a surprise and a gift. It was like reliving the series and the truth is that I remember that moment with a lot of emotion, because it was a very hard job, for many months.

And you didn’t see him rewarded at first…

In open we had not had the recognition that we would have liked, because any artist wants people to like their art. So we did not expect the acceptance on platforms at all. Already by the second season we knew we were going to have a loyal audience. Very few series, apart from ‘La casa de papel’, can say that they have worked so well on a platform without being an original product.

When the series came to Netflix your fame began to grow. How do you manage that you suddenly have a million followers?

The truth is that I had a lot of time, first to prepare for the series and then the shooting and then the broadcast. All that time was like two years. They prepared us and warned us about what the series could be. It could be a success, a failure, or go unnoticed. You had to be prepared for the three pitches. It is true that no matter how much they tell you, help you or advise you, until you experience it first-hand you cannot understand it. It’s like love, that until you fall in love you won’t know what it’s like to be in love. I am a calm person, I take everything patiently. And what you call fame… Well, it’s a change. It does not change overnight, but it is true that it reaches a platform that is in 190 countries and exploits everything. Yesterday a girl who had seen the series asked me how I’m doing, and I told her that it doesn’t bother me, I’m excited that someone values your work and wants to know about you. It came in the pack of what could happen with this series.

‘Toy boy’ was your first experience as an actor. What is it like right off the bat having to expose yourself so much, playing a stripper, getting naked…?

The last five years of my life have been very, very intense, everything has gone very fast. It is true that that is also why they chose me, because there was preparation time. We spent nine months preparing and then eight months shooting. All the first projects in the world in any field are difficult, because the first time you always have little experience and it shows. I tried to defend it in the best possible way, and I had some professionals by my side who helped me a lot. I was aware of that, I knew I was going to be in the eye of the hurricane, I had a responsibility to do a good job, but I have always taken it calmly. I thought: “if the network, the producer and everyone trusts me, it’s because I’m ready.” Or if during the preparation they had seen that it did not reach the objective, they would have changed people. It was an act of faith, just like with the performance I jumped into the pool and said ‘”let’s go for it all, give it all, and when you go to bed say: I’ve given it all”. You can always do better, obviously, but not because it’s your first time. This is life.

Before you were a footballer and now you are an actor. Would you like to make a new change or what do you stay with?

If the profession allows me, I want to be an actor all my life. I have discovered a profession with which I have fallen in love. I will always say it, that when they gave me the opportunity I said: I’m going to try. Every day I want to be an actor more. For me it is a gift that has fallen from heaven. Imagine a food that you have never tried and say “it’s my favorite food”. Well, the same thing happened to me (laughs).
