Japan imposes new package of sanctions against Russia; freezes assets of banks and 140 individuals

Prime Minister of JapanFumio Kishida, announced a new package of sanctions against Russia and stressed that it will freeze the assets of 140 Russian individuals and banks, and will prohibit the export of Japanese technology products to Russia, within the framework of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Kishida spoke about the new sanctions package in London, where he wrapped up his week-long tour of Southeast Asia and Europe. “The G7 has played a leading role in the international community’s efforts to deal with the situation in Ukraine. We have to continue strengthening their unity to protect world peace and order,” the president stressed, as reported by the Japanese chain NHKNews.

Prime Minister of Japan who visited Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand before landing in Europe, said the leaders of the three countries have affirmed that sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected anywhere in the world.

“We must not allow any unilateral change of the status quo by force in the Indo-Pacific. In the face of the current crisis, Japan should promote its free and open Indo-Pacific initiative,” Kishida said.

He also commented that he and his counterparts have discussed the security situation in East Asia, including North Korea’s programs and the East and South China seas, where the Asian giant is intensifying its activities.

Japan and Southeast Asian leaders have agreed to work together to address these security issues, including North Korea’s kidnapping of Japanese citizens decades ago.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday called Russia’s entry ban on 63 Japanese citizens, including Kishida, unacceptable in retaliation for Tokyo’s sanctions against Moscow over Ukraine’s invasion.
