Jalisco maintains national leadership in agri-food production


Guadalajara, Jalisco. The agricultural and fishing production of Jalisco maintains the national leadership with 41.2 million tons produced in 2021, according to official figures from the federal government, published in the 2022 Agrifood Expectations report.

The agricultural, livestock and fishing production of Jalisco represented 14% of the national total, which amounted to 294.5 million tons.

According to the report of the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) of the federal government, the value of agricultural and fisheries production in Jalisco amounted to 195.252 million pesos, well above the second place that was Michoacán whose production value was 104,133 million pesos.

These entities were followed by Sinaloa (100,952 million pesos), Veracruz (98,557 million), Sonora (86,943 million), Guanajuato (72,360 million), Chihuahua (68,593 million), Puebla (53,049 million), San Luis Potosí (40,988 million) and Durango (40,887 million).

The official balance of the Sader highlights the leadership of Jalisco’s state agriculture in products such as eggs, cow’s milk, pork, chia and tamarind, among others. In the agricultural sector alone, Jalisco was the national leader with 35.7 million tons produced last year.

With official data, it is observed that of the foods in which Jalisco was the national leader last year, milk stands out with a production of 2.7 million tons; the egg with 1.6 million tons; pork with 380,000 tons; chia with 4,138 tons and tamarind with 23,501 tons produced.

However, the SIAP does not highlight other products in which Jalisco is a national leader, such as the Blue Tequilana Weber agave, the blueberry and the raspberry.

The products in which the entity ranks second nationally are sugar cane with 7.3 million tons; poultry with 419,000 tons and beef with 249,000 tons.

In the livestock sector, Jalisco ranks first nationally with 5.5 million tons that represent 22.8% of the total national production, with a value of 108,507 million pesos that represent 20.4% of the national value.

The above figures mean that, in the livestock sector, Jalisco’s production is above entire regions of the country such as the Northwest region (Baja California, Baja California Sur, Nayarit, Sinaloa and Sonora) which produces 7% of the national total; the Central region (Mexico City, Guerrero, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Morelos, Puebla and Tlaxcala) which contributes 12.5%; and the South-Southeast (Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatán) with 15.2 percent.
