Interest rate hikes seek, unsuccessfully, to curb inflation

The Bank of Mexico is among the seven central banks of emerging economies that have moved the reference rate the most to face the strong inflationary acceleration facing the world.

Of this group, Brazil, Russia, Chile and Peru have presented more pronounced increases than Mexico in the interest rate.

Mexico went from an interest rate of 4.25% at the beginning of 2021 to a rate of 5.00% in the most recent decision of monetary politics.

Specialists agree that this measure has been ineffective in slowing down the rate at which the price level is increasing.
