Initiative against breast cancer promoted

According to data from the Breast Cancer Foundation (FUCAM), in Mexico, only 31% of cases of this type of cancer are detected in early stages, so specialists recommend annual mammograms for women over 40 years of age, in addition to complementary practices and studies such as self-examination, clinical breast exams and ultrasounds, to detect warning signs.

From AXA, in order to facilitate the population’s access to quality health services, they promote the Vida Para Nosotras initiative so that more women living in vulnerable communities have access to mammograms.

“Since March 8 of this year, AXA Mexico has allocated a percentage of the Life ProTGT insurance premiums with Additional Compensation for Cancer to AXA Mexico Foundation. These resources will make it possible to perform mammograms, through FUCAM mobile units, to 1,500 women as of November 1 of this year, ”explained Ingrid Cerwinka, director of Fundación AXA México.

The mammograms will be performed in the states of Morelos, Chiapas, the State of Mexico and Mexico City and, in addition to this, if a woman has a positive diagnosis, she will be supported with the costs derived from the treatment through FUCAM.

According to the World Health Organization, the majority of breast cancer cases and deaths from this disease occur in low- and middle-income countries; where access to information and studies for early detection is less. Five-year survival of this disease exceeds 90% in more developed countries, while in India and South Africa, for example, it is 66% and 40%, respectively.

“It is very important that all of us participate in raising awareness about the relevance of breast self-examination and about the importance of all women over 40 having a mammogram every year. Governments, companies and civil society must work together to reduce the effects of this terrible disease ”, added Ingrid Cerwinka.

The company makes a call to raise awareness about self-care and timely detection, since these play a key role in the management of breast cancer. It has been shown that, when detected early, the risk of dying decreases by 35% in women over 50 years of age; it has also meant that more patients undergoing treatment for this condition have avoided major surgical procedures, such as mastectomy.
