In the lair of the witch Jorane

Jorane gave herself all the time she needed to put on the show Hemenetset, which will premiere in Quebec and Montreal in April. She conceived it first and foremost as a scenic, living show, where musicians will be called upon to dress up and move on stage. Do we say face-to-face today?

Then, animated by the energy of the team with whom she conceived her project, the singer and cellist gave in to the desire to first make an album with the music that forms the basis of the show. This is how was born Hemenetset the album, available now. Hemenetset is an invented word, as the musician likes them, a word intended to lead us elsewhere. A word that the mysterious artist, half-inhabited witch, half-goddess in trance, repeats like a call, an ultimatum, a cry.

“It is a word that is incanted in the imperative, a call to the ultimate expression of oneself,” she says, joined in her house in the Laurentians. This is how I describe it, how I send it. I had asked several people to tell me Hemenetset in their own way. They sent me some super Hemenetset ”. She put them together to make a sort of trailer for the project.

Take off for space

While his latest album, Melody, declined like a lullaby, an invitation to appeasement, even to sleep, Hemenetset has both very ethereal ethereal sequences, and others full of rage and anger. She invites us here, with her team, several members of which have been working with her for years, to enter another dimension, in the nebulae of the sky or in the earthly tectonic movements, by which she has moreover named some of its parts.

“Nebulae are the place of birth, of all possibilities, it was a good way to name the rooms without giving them a very precise predisposition, we are not in sharp themes, in a story where we can determine everything, we are in a vastness. In this album, she hears air, fire, earth and water. She sees sandstorms, waves, lush forests, beautiful flowers, waterfalls. “I am in an uncompromising proposition,” she said. During the show, she also intends to exploit both this notion of the infinitely large and the infinitely small.

Among her references, she cites in particular Jóhann Jóhannsson, for the music of the film The Arrival. But Jorane composes essentially instinctively, even if she says that the whole team kept “a concern for aesthetics quite precise” during the realization, which she co-signs with Mike Bell. “For the acoustic instruments, the piano, the strings, the double bass, we wanted to give an aesthetic, a sound, an impression, even if it seems strange, colder, more airy. “In the studio, they then added” the electro and the sound design that we wanted to put around the matrix of strings, the composition that was made at the base “.

But his inspiration also comes from books. She quotes the book Women running with wolves, by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, the scientist Jill Bolte Taylor, the philosophers Emanuele Coccia and Abdenour Bidar, whom she likes to quote by saying that in order to find the balance, it is necessary to relate to others, to nature and to oneself.

Passage in antimatter

As an introduction to the album, Jorane invites her audience to walk through the room of antimatter, a video accompanied by music that she also intends to project at the entrance of the show, which will bring together several art forms.

“Antimatter is really the antechamber of the project. Antimatter is the room to deconstruct yourself a little, to try to remove all the visual cues you may have in advance, the predispositions, in order to be able to fully enter the new music, ”she says.

At the end of the interview, Jorane, generally very discreet, wishes to address the fact that she is the new spokesperson for the organization The Lighthouse, Children and Family, which provides palliative care to children at the end of their life as well as respite days for parents whose children suffer from a fatal illness. It is an organization that his son Manolo, now 15, has been attending since he was four years old.
