In Nuevo León they seek to promote a taste for wine and promote wine tourism


Monterey, NL. Eleven Wineries, formed the Nuevo Leon Wine Associationwith the aim of detonating this agribusiness in the state, through the cultivation of grapes, the production of wines, and promote wine tourism in the entity.

“We estimate a significant growth of the industry and additionally we will be able to promote wine tourism with a potential market of thousands of visitors to the various vineyards during the harvest season (grape harvest festival), which will economically strengthen the different regions. where the vine is produced,” said Rosa Pola Valdez García, president of the Nuevo León Wine Association.

Valdez García, commented to The Economist that his Vinícola Maravillas was founded 18 years ago in the municipality of García, where the vine is grown and different varieties of wine are produced.

Although in Nuevo León the taste for beer predominates, the culture of wine tasting is beginning, but consumption is expected to increase as in Mexico City, Puebla, Guadalajara and Querétaro.

He commented that this agribusiness is not affected by drought, since this crop requires sun, air and water stress to produce the best harvests.

The municipalities where wine is grown and made are: Allende, Bustamante, Cadereyta, García, Linares and Santiago, and they recently started producing wine in Montemorelos and Higueras.

For example, in June 2021, after two previous years of work, in the municipality of Higueras, Viñas de Picachos obtained the first harvest of vinable grapes.

There are 11 founding houses in the association, and they represent 32 hectares of cultivation, with a production capacity of 160 tons of grapes that transformed into wine represents an economic value of more than 70 million pesos.

They currently generate 250 jobs, and it is expected that by next year they could generate up to 650 direct and indirect jobs.

The founding houses are: Viñedo Garza Moschen, Viña Inés, Casa Quve, Hacienda LH, Vinícola Maravillas, Viñas de Picachos, Viñedo Santa Teresa, Viñedo Linares, Vinos y Viñedos Montérrez, Bodega Dos Mundos and Viñedo Mochuelos.

Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Columbar, Grenache, Merlot, Shiraz, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir are grown.
