Imports of “scrap” trucks increased 16% from January to October 2021

The importation of heavy “junk” vehicles increased 15.7% during the first 10 months of 2021 in our country, compared to the previous year, by adding 9,153 units, which become unfair competition for Mexican manufacturing.

According to the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT), the cumulative figure is the highest recorded since 2014 and the third since 2009.

“From January to October of this year, 9,153 units entered scrap that compared to the 7,913 imported during the same period of 2020, mean a growth of 15.7%, making 2021 one of the years with the highest imports, “reproved Miguel Elizalde, president of ANPACT.

He said that the excessive importation of junk vehicles is generated, among other factors, because many of these vehicles no longer meet the standards for driving in the United States.

The president of ANPACT specified that the growth of 15.7% registered up to the month of October represents a very considerable increase when compared to previous years.

This figure has grown almost three times compared to the period 2019 to 2020, in which it reached an increase of 4.2%. In this way, it can be concluded that the importation of junk vehicles has recently increased.

He mentioned that the units are discarded in that country due to the risks they generate in terms of road safety and impact on the environment.

However, they are imported into the country, without meeting the safety standards, nor the physical-mechanical conditions necessary to offer a safe, sufficient, efficient and non-polluting mobility option.

“It is necessary to have in Mexico a robust regulatory and supervisory system that is complied with, so that they do not circulate vehicles of waste from other countries, ”fought the leader of the trucks.

With 14 partners (Dina, Freightliner, Hino, International, Isuzu, Kenworth, Mack, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Scania, Volkswagen, Volvo, Cummins and Detroit Diesel), 10 vehicle manufacturing plants and 2 engine remanufacturing plants in 8 entities of the Republic, the Automotive industry Mexican heavy vehicle exporter, ranks as the number one exporter of trucks worldwide, the fourth largest producer and exporter of cargo vehicles and the tenth largest producer of buses.
