To help you prepare for the written portion of your CELPIP Test, we have put together the following 7 strategies.
We know that for some test takers, making sure their written English skills match their speaking, reading and listening skills can be a challenge. With these 7 strategies, you’ll be able to build confidence in your writing and prepare for your next test.
1) Please read the notice carefully and address all parts of the question.
To ensure that you are answering all parts of the written question, please follow all instructions provided. This means taking the time to develop your answer and considering the supporting information you want to include to help build your answer. As you develop your answer, be sure to continue addressing the question and keep all supporting details relevant to the task at hand.
2) Practice typing on a computer
Remember when you are preparing for your test that the CELPIP is delivered entirely on a computer, so all written responses will be typed on a keyboard. Make sure you’re comfortable typing on a keyboard, and practice using it as often as you can, even if you’re used to typing with a pen and paper. Keeping a journal on your laptop and writing emails to your friends and family are a few ways to keep your writing skills and confidence sharp.
3) Keep your writing organized
Constructing well-planned sentences and paragraphs will help your ideas and arguments flow logically and clearly. Taking time at the beginning of your writing assignment to outline will help you tailor your ideas and supporting details to your response. Remember to use greetings, transitions, and goodbyes as necessary to make your response appropriate and fit the prompt.
4) Vary your use of grammatical structures and vocabulary
When writing your answer, be sure to use a diverse and natural vocabulary. Demonstrating the size of your vocabulary is important, but it is equal to the appropriateness of the words used. In addition, it supports a wide range of vocabulary with varied grammatical structures. Use sentences of varying lengths and complexities to establish your proficiency and demonstrate your command of written English.
5) Watch your word count
The word count limits provided for your written responses include some leniency and do not need to match the number of words. exactly but try to stick to that number as much as possible. Missing the word count or going over it significantly could affect your score. A word counter is provided for the written response sections so that you can easily keep track of the number of words in your response.
6) Manage your time carefully
Use the first few minutes of your written response time to prepare an outline, and allow additional time at the end of your response to reread and review your work.
7) Reread your writing
Planning your time carefully and giving yourself a few extra minutes to review your work will help you improve your answer. Take the time to look for common mistakes you make in your writing. Although the writing component of the CELPIP test includes a spell check feature, consider using the correct word for your answer when the spell check identifies an error.
