As the school year comes to a close for thousands of college and university students, Kingston is giving tips on how to have a smooth move-out. For schools like Queen’s, the winter term officially ends on April 30th.
Kingston asks students to:
Consider how COVID-19 impacts your move-out plans. Please follow public health guidance. Wipe down touch points with a disinfectant and make sure everyone washes their hands before and after moving items. Wear face coverings and practice physical distancing, when possible, to protect anyone outside your household who is helping you.
Close your Utilities Kingston account. A minimum of five business days are necessary to ensure the account is closed on the date requested. You’ll want to do this before you lease ends. Accounts can be closed by visiting the Utilities Kingston close account page or by phone at 613-546-0000. (Hydro One electricity customers can call 1-800-434-1235. Enbridge customers can call 1-888-774-3111).
- Dispose of any unwanted items properly. Not sure where it goes? Use the City’s Waste Lookup tool.
- Drop unwanted items off at paid disposal sites. These locations charge a fee for waste disposal. Items brought to them end up in landfill.
- Waste Management: 62 St Remy Pl, 613-549-7401. Open Monday to Friday (contact Waste Management directly for hours of operation). At the City’s request, Waste Management will have extended hours on April 30 and May 1 to help with student move out. This facility will be open Saturday April 30 from 8 am – 4 pm and Sunday May 1 from 7:30 am – 12 pm
- Waste Connections of Canada: 1266 McAdoo’s Lane, 613-548-4428. Please call ahead for hours of operation.
- Consider donating, trading or recycling items. The Queen’s University Arts and Science Undergrad Society (ASUS), along with the Kingston Youth Shelter, Dawn House, Trellis HIV and Community Care is asking students to drop furniture, household items, electronics, spent batteries, clothing and food off at the ASUS office (183 University Ave.) from 12-4 pm on April 27, 28 and 29. Students can also stop by to pick up items they would like for their household. Surplus items will be donated to local charities, thrift stores or appropriate waste facilities.
- Be a good neighbour! Be mindful of the property standards and solid waste bylaws and leave your property clean. The Yard and Streets and Property Standards bylaws require yards to be free of any garbage or debris. There will be by law officers enforcing these laws so plan ahead.
