If you see Dubas on the street, don’t mention waivers to the Maple Leafs GM

For Kyle Dubas, waivers have become a four-letter word.

The Maple Leafs general manager figured he had some depth on Sunday with the addition of goalie Harri Sateri out of the KHL.

On Monday, Sateri was claimed by the Arizona Coyotes off waivers. That follows a history of Dubas’ tough luck with waivers, going back to October 2018 when goalies Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard were lost on the same day.

“We’ve had 11 guys claimed, which I think is double (any other team in the NHL), so it’s a good advertisement for agents if you want your players to come to a place where they’re going to get lots of attention and get claimed, probably a feather in our cap,” Dubas said with sarcasm. “It hurts in moments like this when you have guys claimed.”

Sateri, Dubas thought, was a solid option.

“We just didn’t feel there was anything out there for the prices paid (in trading for a goalie), that was going to make it worthwhile for us and make it work salary-wise for us,” Dubas said.
