“If you refuse to listen to this, it will never end”, CIDE community takes the Mexico-Toluca highway

The student and professor community of the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE), along with other universities, took the Mexico-Toluca Highway in both directions for approximately 6 hours. This happened after the Assembly of Associates of CIDE approved the amendment to the statutes of this study center by four votes in favor.

With two votes against by the College of Mexico and the Ministry of Economy; one abstention from the Bank of Mexico and four votes in favor of the secretariats of Energy, Finance, Education and the Economic Cultural Fund, the statutes amended by dr. José Romero Tellaeche will allow to protest as director of said institution.

“With concern and sadness we see that the authorities allowed this assault instead of adhering to the law. By breaking his word the movement will escalate. The @Conacyt_MX today democracy is deteriorating, we will fight to restore it “, the CIDE meeting wrote through its Twitter account.

After 09:00 in the morning and in parallel with the moment when the session convened by the head of Conacyt, María Elena Álvarez-Buylla, would begin, the community made room for the closure of the circulation of the Mexico-Toluca -road in the direction of the City, where CIDE is located.

There, the organizers of the protest assured that the blockade would be maintained for 56 minutes, explaining that they referred to every day that has passed since José Antonio Romero Tellaeche was falsely elected as director of CIDE. Aware of the outcome of the vote, however, the protesters decided to continue the protest until a representative of the government came to serve as a negotiator.

“Álvarez Buylla sustained the pressure in the Members’ Meeting from 9 in the morning until a few minutes ago, when he succeeded in implementing this reform with two votes against – we thank and acknowledge the courage of the institutions that uphold the law. respected and common sense and they voted against this absurd reform … () However, this absurd reform was approved in such a way that Álvarez Buylla’s arbitrariness and authoritarianism were legalized “, said Eduardo Muñiz, spokesperson for the Student Assembly. .

Catherine Andrews, academic and former academic secretary of CIDE, in turn confirmed that at no point did the authorities of CIDE or Conacyt take over the task of seeking professors for dialogue. “Instead, they dedicated themselves to continuing to act on the regulations of the institution… () The meeting of professors seriously asks for dr. Romero and dr. Álvarez Buylla that they stop running over our statutes, that we return to legality ”.

He said that the reforms proposed are not those required by the statute, i.e. they are illegal and seek in the first instance the appointment of dr. Romero, as well as the person in charge of the office, Jordy Micheli. . He added that the community is unanimous in defending CIDE and the work of the community.

Another of the protests was that at the same time they announced a mobilization to the offices of Conacyt, also a group of students entered the CIDE to take the desk of the director José Antonio Romero Tellaeche amid slogans to the street.

The student and academic community was accompanied by representatives from 14 public universities in the country, including Guadalajara, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Durango, Morelos, Nuevo León, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Aguascalientes.

At around 14:00, the mayor of Cuajimalpa, Adrián Rubalcava, arrived at the CIDE to request the release of the roads. The community asked him to intervene to establish a dialogue with the federal government. After the talks between the mayor and the community, the highway in the direction of Toluca was opened and minutes later it was released in the direction of Mexico City. Finally, the community reported that they will review legal channels to challenge the changes approved this Monday.
