“If you are on this call, you are fired”: The challenge of facing unemployment in December

“If you are on this call, you are part of the unfortunate group that is being fired.” With this message, Vishal Garg, CEO of Better, a mortgage loan company in the United States, laid off 900 workers through Zoom. The video went viral on social networks and although it is a case that was presented in another country, it shows that the holidays are not a shield against Unemployment.

Reach December without work Or, losing it during the month implies a complicated outlook and a strong emotional blow, specialists agree. This is largely due to the fact that the last month of the year is linked to coexistence with co-workers, but also the desire to have income to cover the expenses of the end of the year parties.

“The December dates we associate them with peace and tranquility, so not having a job can lead to a level of anguish greater than the one you had, ”explains Alma Campos, human resources consultant and founder of the platform Mueve y Emprende.

According to the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE) in Mexico there are 4.4 million people in an active job search. Although 40% of the unemployed population manages to find a job in less than a month, for 32% the job opportunity can take up to three months.

“A series of negative emotions such as sadness, frustration, or despair. As much as your family encourages you, they are complicated moments because you would like to have the money for the exchange or Christmas dinner. Unfortunately, arriving at this time without a job is something that becomes too complicated “, points out Ángel Macías Dircio, general director of Cahum.

From the perspective of Alma Campos, the situation of the unemployment at the end of the year it becomes even more complex due to the myth that in the last month of the year there are no vacancies or hires.

“We think that in December you can’t find a job, but really many opportunities open up, mainly temporary in industries with high demand for services, but which can become fixed positions. But also many areas of recruitment and headhunters We are looking for candidates at this time because companies want to start the year with the new positions filled, ”he says.

In that sense, the specialist recommends that people give the temporary jobs and visualize them as the entrance door for better spaces and to have an income. At the same time, don’t pause your job search for the holidays.

That is, pause the job search December is like not leaving the letter to Santa Claus on the tree. “If there are vacancies, but you have to look for them because they will not arrive alone. You have to be in a constant search because the recruitment specialists and the headhunters We don’t find talent because people don’t look for it, ”says Alma Campos.

The myth that during the end of the year there is no employment opportunities generates a drop in applications that makes it difficult for recruitment areas to fill vacancies. Paradoxically, this season is the one in which less competition is registered for a job.

For his part, Ángel Macías believes that the holidays are also a good opportunity for people to develop new skills and, in the same way, clearly define their professional goals.

“It is important to be active, work with the personal brand, generate content and be in the sights of recruiters because we do not know when this opportunity may come,” says the specialist.

Posada versus unemployment

With the intention of offering a space for distraction and coexistence, but also where you can access personalized advice, tools such as interview simulators and employability advice, various specialists in human capital issues came together to create the Posada vs unemployment, an initiative aimed at people who do not have work.

The aim of this project is that the unemployed population does not run out of a end of the year celebration and for this, there will be live music, a raffle for gifts and cash, games, meditation sessions, access to tools to improve employability, vacancies and personalized advice to create an impactful CV.

“The end of year partys It is something that the vast majority of us love, celebrating the end of the year with coworkers or having the opportunity for a raffle or a delicious dinner. However, when you are unemployed, this tradition is lost and we see the announcements of the former colleagues about the celebration that they will have and they are things that are affecting the state of mind ”, explains Macías Dircio, one of the promoters of the project.

The Posada vs unemployment It is a virtual space and will be held this December 14 at 7:00 p.m., free access And although the quota is for a maximum of 1,000 people, it will be broadcast through the social networks of some sponsors so that more people can access the employability advice and entertainment activities.

Alma Campos believes that these free spaces They should be used by people actively seeking employment because they can facilitate access to a job opportunity through the presence of recruiters.
